In 2007, the classic design of the Draped Bust Half Cent was used for a newly minted gold coin. The 2007 Thomas Jefferson’s Liberty Gold Coin was issued as the third release of the ongoing First Spouse Gold Coin program. This series features the spouses of each President in the order of the Presidency. The coins are struck in a composition of 24 karat gold and contain one-half ounce of gold.
A section of the authorizing legislation for the series provided guidance on the designs to be used for the series in cases where a President served in office without a spouse. An image would be used on the obverse which is emblematic of the concept of Liberty, as represented on a United States coin issued during the Presidential term.
The obverse design chosen for the Thomas Jefferson’s Liberty Gold Coin was the Draped Bust Half Cent, originally designed by Robert Scot. The design was resculpted by Phebe Hemphill with the required inscriptions of the series added. This included “In God We Trust”, “3rd Presidency”, years of the Presidential term “1801-1809″ and the date of issue “2007″.
The reverse of the coin featured Thomas Jefferson’s Monument, located at his Monticello estate. The inscription on the monument is reproduced on the coin.
The 24 karat gold coins were released by the United States Mint on August 30, 2007. The entire maximum authorized mintage of 40,000 coins was sold out with the mintage split evenly between proof and uncirculated coins.
