The 1804 “Spiked Chin” Draped Bust Half Cent (Buy on eBay) is an easily identifiable and popular half cent variety. The variety is clearly identified by the thin spike-like projection extending from Liberty’s chin.
The unusual feature was created by damage to the obverse die during the production process, possibly from a screw or similar object. The variety is always in demand but examples are relatively plentiful, as the obverse was paired with a number of different reverse dies. Examples can be found in grades from well-worn to mint state.
