The 1804 Draped Bust Half Cent, “Spiked Chin” variety is the most easily identifiable and popular of all half cents varieties.
This coin is easily identified by a thin spike extending to the right from the chin of Liberty. This features was probably created by damage to the die during the production process, most likely from a screw or a similar object. A few coins struck with this obverse die are known without the notable feature, and are very rare. The variety is always in demand but examples are relatively easily found, as the obverse was paired with a number of different reverse dies.
This is one of numerous varieties emanating from the large mintage of 1804 Draped Bust Half Cents.
